How to Create a Google Places Account [Concept of the Week]

how to set up google placesGoogle Places is the phone book of the Internet. According to Google, 97% of consumers search for local businesses online. This means your business must be registered and verified with Google Places, or you run the risk of not getting found. It’s free and it only takes 5-10 minutes to set up. If you want people to find your business then you better have a Google Places account.

If your business doesn’t have a physical location than Google doesn’t recommend you create an account. Google states, “Only businesses that make in-person contact with customers qualify for a Google Places listing. Businesses that are under construction or that have not yet opened to the public are not eligible for a listing on Google Places.”

The most important thing you need to do when setting up Google Places is to verify your business. Google has three options to help you verify that your business exists.

  1. Verification by Phone
  2. Verification by SMS
  3. Verification by Mail

Verification lets Google know that your business is real and that Google needs to start displaying it in the search results.  You should use a business email account and, if possible, an email account that matches your business’ website domain.

Here are the items you must get right when creating your listing:

  • Business Name
  • Business Address (physical business location)
  • Local Business Phone Number (not the toll-free number)
  • Website URL
  • Hours of Operations
  • Areas Served

I highly recommend you write a very compelling business description, which explains why you’re in business, how you can help people, and what you do.

You should add photos, videos, and offers to show people the business location, its value and to build trust. You can also highlight special promotions, post live updates, and respond to reviews from your Google Places account.

So now it’s your turn. Go create your Google Places account now!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the post. There is a so much more to claiming your Google Places listing. It's better to know upfront what is needed and to prepare your information and have it readily available.

For example, the business description can only be 200 characters. Preparing your business description so that it is readable with 2 - 3 keyword phrases will help you rank higher.

Categories are also very important. You are allowed 5. The first category must be one of Google's. The 4 categories left can be custom categories. This is another opportunity to add some keywords to your categories, which will help your business rank for those terms.

Researching keywords specific to your business ahead of time really helps. And, don't forget the competition.

The photos need to be in a certain format, the videos need to be YouTube videos, the coupon offer has guidelines.

I would suggest going through Google Places guidelines before going to claim your Place page.http://bit.ly/agyFaV

Someone from HubSpot wrote this ebook "How To Increase Awareness And Generate Leads With Local SEO" a few months ago. It has a good section on Google Places.

Sorry to go on and on. I have a passion for Google Places. We help local business claim or add their Place page. Google Places is in constant change - keeping up with all their changes is challenging.

Thanks for making people aware at the value of claiming their Google Places listing.

Over and out!

@Lindsay: You can actually specify in your Google Places account that you go to the location of your customers, and the areas you serve. The settings are typically located under the hours of operation.

Hope this helps.

I run a tutoring and training company and we work with professionals at their workplace or in public libraries/cafes. My home office (in Cambridge) is the only registered business location but we serve clients in Boston and New York. Any suggestions on how to handle this with google place pages? My competitors in both cities (who tutor in public locations) have registered an address and their google place listings are coming up ahead of my organic search listing.

Please let me know if you have any advice.

We have a physical location for our office but are not a retail location. We sell to consumers nationwide by phone but do not want foot traffic at our office. Does Google Places still make sense for us? Any feedback would be appreciated.

@Heike: Unless you go to your customer locations, then I don't think a Google Places account makes sense for your business.

I've found Google Places useful time and time again, especially where I find myself making websites for Realtors who want some quick results.
