How to Turbocharge your Website Traffic with Blogging [Customer Story]

As chief operating officer and head blogger at New York Parking Ticket, I wanted to jumpstart the traffic to our fledging website. So I followed the Hubspot blogging blueprint religiously, then started to measure the results.

The Results:

    • 904 visitors stumbled onto our website during our first full month of business, including my Mom and Dad, during which I blogged regularly.
    • 1232 visitors (probably thinking we were the NYC government) strolled through our Internet property during the second month, when I increased the frequency of my blogging, at times publishing two posts a day.
    • To my utter amazement, traffic exploded during our third month of operation to 4,000 visitors.
    • We are currently basking in the warm glow of >20,000 monthly visitors (as of December 2011).

Step 1: Analyze the effectiveness of blog topics

We've experimented with many different blog topics on our blog, and continue to measure and identify the most effective topics for traffic generation.

Step 2: Analyze the effectiveness of headlines

Here's an eye-opening comparison between two similar headlines sitting on top of two similar posts: 3 Valuable NYC Parking Ticket Tips versus How to beat 3 NYC Parking Tickets. One post earned 312 views while the other keeps on giving with 21,627 website views, and 16,735 Slide Share views. Can you guess which headline is our annuity? Take this poll to find out!

Step 3: Keep writing

I cannot emphasize strongly enough how important it is to blog frequently. I currently post a blog article three times per week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. When I started blogging, I posted 3-5 times per month. HubSpot data doesn't lie. Blogging totally turbocharged my site's traffic, which grew from 1232 visitors in February 2009 to 4000 visitors in March 2009; and increased continuously to a high of more than 20,000 visitors per month in December 2011.

The HubSpot tools that we used to unlock the front door to our HubSpot-hosted website were:

It would be impossible to condense all the elements of blogging success into three tips. But these tips are a great starting point.

You would also be well served to:

  • Optimize each post using Hubspot's blogging platform reminders which magically appear when you forget, for example, to include a keyword in your meta description
  • Include relevant and alluring images, using Hubspot's image tool
  • Conclude with a strong call-to-action, using Hubspot's CTA builder
  • Build a landing page using the Hubspot landing page wizard
  • Build a thank-you page using Hubspot's webpage builder
  • Publish high quality, evergreen blog posts, free white papers, guides, E-books, etc.

If a 63 year-old dinosaur like me can do it, so can you. Try it. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks for listening. Now it's your turn. How 'bout sharing some of your secret tips to blogging success? Your opinion matters to all of us.

Congrats on the good work. It is nice to hear stories about sucess. I think it is good to remind people that spending time and writing quality blog posts with great titles, photos, is even more important than frequency of blog posts.

Brandon,

Good afternoon.
That is so kind of you to say.

I agree with you 100%.
I still shudder when I think back on my first month alone waiting for some visitors.

Do you blog? What's your number one, most important piece of advice to a new blogger?
Posted @ Thursday, March 01, 2012 1:17 PM by lawrence berezin
Great story. Kinda proves how important the blog title is. Once I looked at your blog titles, I could have guessed which posts had the most traffic and links. Attn: Kmart Shoppers isn't gonna get you good traffic. How To ..... is the secret.

Great job! Aren't results addictive?

Jason,

Thanks so much for taking your valuable time to share your thoughts. You are correct, not only about "Attention K-Mart Shoppers" headline, but that positive results are addictive. It fuels you with the energy to keep on blogging.

I stopped by your website. It's really super. If I had more space, I would have talked about the importance of a professional header, and a carefully conceived, and well-laid out home page.

You've got both! Very impressive.

Thanks for the kind words. I think our header sucks, but that's another story.

1.5 years ago...I didnt know what a long tail keyword was. Now I own my own inbound marketing company...it's been a crazy year! Hubpot does such a good job with training people that aren't afraid to work hard and put in the time.

Such an amazing company! So happy I found hubspot. Life changing stuff.

Larry, you were my inspiration. I was considering Hubspot and when I stumbled on your video, I picked up the phone to call you.

I don't know if you remember, but you could not have been more gracious with your time and explaining to me how much Hubspot has done for you and your business.

I took your advice and have been blogging 3 times a week since May 2011 and our traffic has grown from 500 people stumbling in to over 3,500 last month.

Thank you again and Happy Blogging!

Barry,

I certainly do remember you and our conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed our talk.

Your success story is amazing. Did your traffic grow in spurts, all at once, or just nice and easy.

How do you chose a topic to blog about.

I love your use of slider images on your home page.

Best,
Larry

Our traffic grew slowly, but more each month. I try and go through the keyword tool to find those great long tail keywords. After that, listening to my clients questions or asking my staff what they feel are the biggest questions they hear on a daily basis.

I'm glad you like our slider images, but I hope you like our new ones better. We're in the process of "freshening up" our website and updating it to a more modern look and feel.

Can't do everything at once.

Thanks again,

Barry

Diane,

I love all things kitchen, and your website is stunning. It is designed so well.

Your "Free Estimate" button is perfect. Great location and cries out, "click on me."

What's your most valuable Hubspot tool?

I asked our friends to take a one question survey and pick the headline that garnered the most views.

Thanks for taking the time to respond...correctly. 82% of the respondents picked the winning headline..."How to Beat 3 NYC Traffic Tickets" was and still is the champ.
