This project will help you increase website traffic by focusing on ways to improve the channels that are underperforming and optimizing the top performing channels. 

*Should be a HubSpot Customer for at least 3 months.

Step 1: Identify Low Performing Website Traffic Sources

In this step, you’ll identify the top performing traffic sources to your website. Based on your findings, you’ll then be able to optimize each source to ensure that you get the most out of every channel.

  1. Navigate to the Sources tool.
  2. Modify the default report by changing the time frame of your report to rolling date range for the past six months 
  3. Identify which source(s) is/are in a decline. A source is considered in decline if traffic from that source has consistently decreased over the last 3 three months.

Step 2: Increase Website Traffic from Organic Search

In this step you’ll work on improving traffic from organic search using blogging and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

  1. Navigate to the Blog tool.
  2. Select Published from the left navigation menu.
  3. Sort your published blog posts by published date.
  4. Identify the blog posts with the most views in the last six months.
  5. Optimize each blog post around one long-tail keyword. This will help you improve SEO and increase the number of visitors to your site.

Step 3: Increase Website Traffic from Social Media
Learn how

To-do

in this step, you’ll learn how to use social media to drive traffic with your most popular pieces of content.

  1. Navigate to the Compare Platforms Report in Social tool.
  2. Identify the social media platforms that help generate traffic to your website.
  3. Use the Social Publishing tool to promote the updated top performing blog posts on the social media platforms that generate the most traffic.
  4. Pair each unique message with a captivating image and a link.

Pro Tip

If you find that a particular social message is performing well, try republishing the content on a different day and time. This will increase the reach and visibility of your message as well as its overall performance.

Step 4: Increase Website Traffic from Paid Search

  1. Do keyword research using the Keywords tool.
    • Are there any keywords you can add to your paid search campaign?
    • Are there any negative keywords that are detracting from the success of your campaigns or that should be removed from your keyword list?
    • Use this Keyword Research Project as a helpful resource!
  2. Modify your current paid search campaigns by using different creative assets for mobile users and desktop users.
  3. Create a landing page to accompany your paid search campaign.
  4. Diversify your paid search platforms. While the most popular search engine is Google, try adding Bing,Yahoo, or industry specific search sites.

Any keyword that is being tracked in the Keywords tool with visits will appear in the Sources chart with a checkmark in the 'Track?' column. Make sure that all the keywords in the Sources report are being tracked by putting a checkmark next to the keyword.

Step 5: Increase Website Traffic from Email Marketing

Email marketing is done by hundreds of companies, however, very few do it exceptionally well. In this step you’ll learn how to increase website traffic from email marketing.

  1. Navigate to the Email tool and sort your sent emails by publish date.
  2. Analyze the emails with the highest click rates. Do they follow best practices? When was the most clicked email sent? What types of content were included in these emails? 
  3. Consider creating an email newsletter for subscribers to your blog. Be sure to make the email easy to share and even encourage them to share it with friends and colleagues.
  4. Navigate to the Sources tool.
  5. Evaluate your email marketing traffic sources.
    • Which email campaigns generated the most traffic to your website?

Grow the reach of your emails by including social sharing buttons. This will allow email recipients to share your email with their social networks.

Step 6: Optimize your Top Performing Website Traffic Sources.

  1. Navigate to the Sources tool.
  2. Identify your top performing website traffic sources.
  3. Modify the default report by changing the time frame of your report to rolling date range for the past six months. Same as in Step 1.
  4. Identify which Source(s) is/are performing well. A source is considered high performing if it generates a significant amount of traffic comparison to those sources that are in a decline, and has continued steady growth in recent months.
  5. Optimize each traffic source using the guidelines outlined in steps 2-5

Monitor your Sources data on a weekly or monthly basis to ensure that your website traffic is on track to grow and are of your traffic sources are optimized in order to get the best results.
  1. Navigate to the Sources tool.
  2. Review your Sources data. 
    • What sources are helping to generate the most traffic? 
    • What sources are generating the least amount of traffic? 
    • What campaigns are helping increase traffic?
    • Do you notice any trends in the data?
